The Ocean Cleanup - Saving the Worlds Oceans

We have had the good fortune to work with The Ocean Cleanup starting in 2015 documenting the ocean survey of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch where they realized that the patch was twice the size of Texas. This was followed up in 2016 with a press event for their aerial survey and then two quick years later with the launch of their first working unit #001 or affectionately named “Wilson.”

Van Metre Productions handled all video production for this 2 ½ hour live-stream event which captured worldwide attention. We had 8 live camera teams on land, sea and air…with a home base set in the historic control tower at Alameda Naval Airbase, to the press event attended by 60 Minutes and over 100 national and international journalists. The press event then transitioned from the waterfront to a ferry that followed Wilson as it was towed to sea. We were able to conduct live interviews with wunderkid inventor Boyan Slat during the live cast. Other teams included: a roving reporter on Treasure Island who then transitioned to a small boat to follow the flotilla out to sea; a three-person drone team on a chartered yacht; a dedicated camera boat; and a land-based team shooting scenics from key vantage points.

Kudos to my team who used their amazing experience with sports and live events to pull off this technologically challenging feat. Special thanks to LiveU for donating their wireless transmission packs.

A truly amazing experience to be part of a such a historic event and to be surrounded by a team of passionate inventors and engineers.  They are our future hope for a better planet.
